Bone Augmentation

For some patients wishing to have dental implants because of a damage tooth, bone augmentation may be necessary. Here at Mona Lisa Smiles we recognize this and offer some of the best bone augmentation procedures.

What is bone augmentation?

When a tooth is lost or damaged, bone loss will eventually occur in that region because the root is no longer stimulating and stabilizing the bone. The main benefit of dental implants over other tooth replacement options is that an implant biochemically connects directly to the jaw bone; you get a bond that replicates a natural tooth and bone loss is eliminated

Jaw bone loss when a tooth is not replaced

Many people decide not to replace a missing back tooth as they think no one can see it. However, whenever a tooth is lost or extracted a considerable amount of the bone that once surrounded the remaining root portion may disappear. This may cause the remaining teeth to shift and create issues with biting. If several teeth are lost, you may suffer poor nutrition.

Dental implants can preserve the remaining bone.

Bone augmentation describes a variety of procedures used to add bone to the jaw so that dental implants can be placed securely. Implants require enough bone in the jawbone to support them, and if your jaw is too short or too narrow, a bone augmentation procedure is necessary to build more bone.

This is typically done by grafting bone or a bone-like substance to the jaw and waiting for the grafted material to fuse with the existing bone over several months.

Mona Lisa Smiles recognizes that each patient is unique and therefore we offer several different types of bone augmentation procedures:

Bone grafting – Bone from your chin, hip or shin is usually best. However we can also use a combination of human cadaver bone and synthetic materials if you are uncomfortable donating bone from your body.
Sinus lift – We can increase the height of your upper jaw by filling your maxillary sinus with bone.
Ridge expansion – A type of bone graft to increase the width of your jaw to allow proper support for a dental implant.
Distraction osteogenesis – This procedure involves inserting a titanium device into the jaw with pins to widen the jaw over time.

Bone augmentation can seem an intimidating procedure, and we at Mona Lisa Smiles understand that the first step in the process is to ensure that you feel comfortable and well informed.

Our friendly, professional, and highly skilled team will help to demystify the process and discuss which procedure is right for you. We have performed numerous successful bone augmentation procedures on our patients and are considered amongst the leaders in this procedure London. If you require more information about bone augmentation then please do not hesitate to call us.

We strongly advise that patients have a dental implant as soon as possible after a tooth is lost to ensure the best cosmetic and functional outcome.

In most cases it will take about 4 – 6 months for a dental implant to fully adhere to the bone before a crown can be attached and full bite force can be applied.
